Global awards program honors companies with innovative supply chains

SCM World is now seeking nominations for its annual Power of the Profession Awards, which recognize "breakthrough" supply chain initiatives and talent development programs.

Have you been part of a supply chain initiative that has produced truly breakthrough results? Or have you helped to launch a successful talent development program that focuses on supply chain management professionals? Consider getting outside recognition of your work (and perhaps raise the visibility of supply chain in your company) by nominating your company for the consulting and analyst company SCM World's annual Power of the Profession Awards.

The awards program is now in its third year. Previous winners include Dow Chemical, Intel, Coca-Cola, and AstraZeneca, among others.


Applying for the awards offers companies several benefits, according to Matt Davis, senior vice president of research at SCM World. "Sharing your story and talking about your innovation is a great way to network in the community," he said in an online video about the program. "Second, and most importantly, I think this is truly the best way to recognize all the hard work that your team has done and really celebrate them in a very public way."

There are two separate awards: Supply Chain Breakthrough of the Year and Talent Breakthrough of the Year. Each includes three subcategories.

For Supply Chain Breakthrough of the Year, the subcategories are:

  • Customer Innovation of the Year, which recognizes a supply chain initiative that has created a more valuable customer experience and achieved a positive, quantifiable impact on customer loyalty.
  • Business Win of the Year, which recognizes a supply chain initiative that has contributed outstanding top-line business performance, profitable growth, savings, and/or given a distinct competitive edge.
  • Social Impact of the Year, which recognizesâ?¨a supply chain initiative that has achieved a positive, quantifiable impact on society, local communities, and/or the environment.

For Talent Breakthrough of the Year, the subcategories are:

  • Talent Diversity Champion of the Year for a supply chain talent program that has resulted in a more diverse and engaged workforce.
  • Talent Payback of the Yearâ?¨ for a supply chain talent initiative that has driven tangible revenue growth, cost savings, product innovation, or outstanding customer satisfaction metrics.
  • Talent Partnership of the Year â?¨for a supply chain talent initiative that has extended capability development across the value chain, quantitatively driving value internally and/or externally with suppliers and partners.

The applications are judged by both a panel of industry experts and the members of the SCM World community. The deadline for applications is Sept. 16, 2016; details about how to enter can be found at SCM World's website.

Logistics economy continues on solid footing

Economic activity in the logistics industry expanded in November, continuing a steady growth pattern that began earlier this year and signaling a return to seasonality after several years of fluctuating conditions, according to the latest Logistics Managers’ Index report (LMI), released today.

The November LMI registered 58.4, down slightly from October’s reading of 58.9, which was the highest level in two years. The LMI is a monthly gauge of business conditions across warehousing and logistics markets; a reading above 50 indicates growth and a reading below 50 indicates contraction.

Descartes: businesses say top concern is tariff hikes

Business leaders at companies of every size say that rising tariffs and trade barriers are the most significant global trade challenge facing logistics and supply chain leaders today, according to a survey from supply chain software provider Descartes.

Specifically, 48% of respondents identified rising tariffs and trade barriers as their top concern, followed by supply chain disruptions at 45% and geopolitical instability at 41%. Moreover, tariffs and trade barriers ranked as the priority issue regardless of company size, as respondents at companies with less than 250 employees, 251-500, 501-1,000, 1,001-50,000 and 50,000+ employees all cited it as the most significant issue they are currently facing.

Blue Yonder users see supply chains rocked by hack

Grocers and retailers are struggling to get their systems back online just before the winter holiday peak, following a software hack that hit the supply chain software provider Blue Yonder this week.

Amazon invests another $4 billion in AI-maker Anthropic

Amazon has deepened its collaboration with the artificial intelligence (AI) developer Anthropic, investing another $4 billion in the San Francisco-based firm and agreeing to establish Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary training partner and to collaborate on developing its specialized machine learning (ML) chip called AWS Trainium.

The new funding brings Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to $8 billion, while maintaining the e-commerce giant’s position as a minority investor, according to Anthropic. The partnership was launched in 2023, when Amazon invested its first $4 billion round in the firm.
