Cimcorp Shares Four Benefits of Automating Warehouses to Solve the Labor Shortage Crisis

Warehouses faced with year-round labor shortages and challenging peak periods can look to automation to optimize space, reduce seasonal labor, better leverage existing employees and save in labor costs

GRIMSBY, Ontario - April 19, 2018 - Cimcorp, a manufacturer and integrator of turnkey robotic gantry-based order fulfillment and tire-handling solutions, advises manual warehouses and distribution centers to consider automation to solve their labor shortage crises in its latest white paper. Titled "Solving the labor shortage crisis: The four benefits of an automated warehouse," the white paper explores the year-round shortages that are felt especially hard during a business' peak period, when demand spikes and orders flood into the warehouse. Cimcorp suggests using automation can help these facilities not only overcome insufficient staffing and keep up during peak periods, but also better manage an expanding inventory, utilize existing staff and improve order accuracy.

During a peak season, warehouse staff struggle to pick and pack an influx of orders and get them out the door on time and with accuracy. Without enough personnel to meet the order volume, companies will often hire seasonal labor, which can be expensive and creates challenges with providing proper training. Moreover, many manufacturers will increase production on popular products in addition to new offerings to meet consumer demands for variety, resulting in fluctuations in inventory and shrinking warehouse space.

Today, automated technology is available that can help warehouses and distribution centers operate more efficiently and effectively both year round and during their busy peak seasons. The four benefits of automation include:

1. Doing more with warehouse space
2. Reducing and improving seasonal labor
3. Better leveraging existing employees
4. Lowering labor costs

Rick Trigatti, North America President, Cimcorp, said, "When faced with a peak period, it's common for distribution centers to be stretched thin by increased order numbers and too few seasonal employees to handle the volume. Coupled with increased seasonal SKUs and consumer demands for faster delivery times, it creates major obstacles to efficient order fulfillment for warehouse managers reliant on manual processes. But by automating the warehouse - both from an operations and cost standpoint - these facilities can accommodate future growth, optimize year-round material flow and be ready to take on any peak period."
