CASE STUDY: STANDARD DISTRIBUTING CO SWITCHES ITS FORKLIFTS TO LI-ION TO RAMP UP EFFICIENCY
STANDARD DISTRIBUTING CO has switched its lift trucks fleet to OneCharge Li-ion batteries, a move that allowed the company to streamline its fleet from 17 trucks down to 12 to do the same job.
It's no secret that many Americans like their beer. From bars to restaurants to liquor and grocery stores, the cold brews are generally easy to find. But what most beer aficionados do not know is that distribution businesses are responsible for getting their favorite beverages to nearby locations.
This is the job of Standard Distributing Co., Inc. of Delaware, a company that serves locations throughout the state.
Having a clean and efficient warehouse is essential to Standard Distributing. The company found this mission was not being fulfilled in the battery changing and charging area for its electric lift trucks running on lead acid batteries. The area was hard to keep clean with the lead acid batteries daily maintenance requirements, frequent changes of the batteries and eight-hour shifts for charging and after-charging cooling.
OneCharge Inc. offered a winning solution with its Li-ion batteries. It was just what Standard Distributing needed to help its operations.
In April of 2019, the company switched its lift trucks fleet to Li-ion, a move that allowed the company to streamline its fleet from 17 trucks down to 12 to do the same job!
The flexibility to configure the lithium-ion batteries for the specific task (high lifts in a temperature-controlled warehouse) allowed to resize the trucks fleet. The Li-ion batteries can be quickly charged anywhere during small breaks and lunchtime, meaning a battery changing and charging area was no longer needed. The part of the warehouse designated for lead acid batteries which repeatedly grew dirty was just cleared.
Switching to OneCharge lithium-ion batteries has improved overall efficiency of material handling operations at Standard Distributing and rendered the warehouse cleaner and safer.
About the Customer
Standard Distributing serves over a thousand licensees statewide, according to the business. Delaware, with a population of 952,000, has a beer market consumption of over 9.2 million cases, the company website reported.
To bring the products to these licensees, Standard Distributing works from a temperature-controlled warehouse and office location in New Castle, Delaware.
The Challenges
The lead acid batteries in use by the company were creating maintenance and safety issues for the staff, adding a significant amount to the operations costs. Standard Distributing needed a safe power source for its trucks, as well as a means for eliminating the ongoing costs associated with battery maintenance.
With sustainability efforts underway and a business serving a variety of customers statewide, the cleanliness and efficiency of the warehouse is of paramount importance, according to Standard Distributing's warehouse manager, Mike Tielleman.
The company had 17 three-wheel sit down trucks running with lead acid batteries.
"The battery charging area was dirty," said Tielleman, who said he was on the lookout for a way to improve this section in the warehouse.
Standard Distributing is committed to its green policy, which the company says is "raising the bar on saving energy and conserving natural resources." Recently, Standard Distributing added the use of OneCharge Li-ion batteries to its green initiatives.
The Solution
In April 2019 at the end of the lease cycle Standard Distributing leaders considered a proposal for the same 17 sit-down trucks powered by lead acid batteries or 12 trucks running with OneCharge Li-ion batteries. They learned a smaller fleet of trucks with Li-ion batteries could be quite sufficient for warehouse needs, since opportunity charging would eliminate the necessity of having spare trucks on hand. Also streamlined would be the physical warehouse space, without the need for battery changing and charging station.
The company decided to move from lead acid to OneCharge Li-ion batteries with the purchase of six Yale ESCO35AD 36v stand-ups and six Yale ERP035VT 36v sit-downs.
The Results
The company is pleased with the impact of the newly implemented equipment, which concurrently addressed the issues of cleanliness, safety and efficiency.
This change fulfilled OneCharge's promise to Standard Distributing for no down time during work shifts for changing batteries.
As the Li-ion batteries do not need to be watered, charged or maintained daily, the warehouse's formerly messy charging station is also no longer a concern, according to company leaders.
The elimination of maintenance needs also means safer working conditions in the warehouse, as workers are not required to work with lead acid batteries with a risk of leaks or spills.
Using Li-ion batteries translated to a reduced fleet of trucks for the company, requiring only 12 trucks on hand in the warehouse as opposed to 17, thanks to the opportunity charging possible with lithium-ion.
In addition to cost savings, these changes also help support the company's effort to pursue a green policy within operations.
"OneCharge Batteries ensured the switch to Li-ion was smooth and caused no interruption to Standard Distributing operations. On top of minimizing downtime during shifts we finally got rid of the lead acid batteries daily maintenance and messy charging area. Both are simply not needed with OneCharge Li-ion Batteries," said Tielleman, of the process of implementing OneCharge batteries and the ensuing improvements to the warehouse facility and operational process which resulted from the change.

Reading, Pa. – Nov. 18, 2024 - Penske Truck Leasing is lighting up a new solar-powered initiative seeking to boost efficiency, minimize energy costs, and reduce emissions initially at select truck leasing,truck rental, and truck maintenance locations in the U.S. with the installation and activation of its first-ever rooftop solar-powered systems.
The company’s new state-of-the-art facility in Channahon, Illinois, is now fully operational, and is predominantly powered by an onsite photovoltaic (PV) solar system, expected to generate roughly 80% of the building’s energy needs at 200 KW capacity. Any remaining required energy will be supplied by the local utility provider.
A Grand Rapids, Michigan, location will be active in the coming months and Penske’s Linden, New Jersey, location is expected to go online in 2025. These facilities are also new state-of-the-art locations.
The new facilities incorporating solar systems in Channahon, Illinois, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Linden, New Jersey, are part of the company’s LEED building program.
Under a power purchase agreement with Sunrock Distributed Generation, seven additional Penske facilities in California are expected to be retrofitted with new PV solar systems in the next year, which are expected to yield roughly 600 KW of renewable energy across all locations. These facilities are located in Fresno, Hayward, La Mirada, National City, Riverside, San Diego and San Leandro.
Penske is collaborating with San Francisco-based ForeFront Power as its lead project consultant on this solar initiative.
“Our solar program is an important piece of our renewable energy strategy and ForeFront Power continues to be an outstanding partner in helping us bring these projects to fruition,” said Drew Cullen, senior vice president of fuels and facility services at Penske. “These investments will allow us to directly generate our own renewable energy to power our locations and continue to support our customers with sustainable solutions.”
On average, four solar panel-powered Penske Truck Leasing facilities will generate an estimated 1-million-kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually and will result in an emissions avoidance of 442 metric tons (MT) CO2e, which is equal to powering nearly 90 homes for one year.
“The initiative to install solar systems at our locations is a part of our company’s LEED-certified facilities process,” explained Ivet Taneva, Penske vice president of environmental affairs. “Investing in solar has considerable economic impacts for our operations as well as the environmental benefits of further reducing emissions related to electricity use.”

LAFAYETTE, Ind., Oct. 10, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Wabash (NYSE: WNC), the visionary leader of connected solutions for the transportation, logistics and distribution industries, announced today it was selected to receive a $1.6 million grant award from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) to support a research and development project aimed at decarbonizing the commercial transportation industry.
The three-year project, set to begin next year in partnership with the University of Delaware’s Center for Composite Materials, focuses on integrating high-efficiency solar energy into refrigerated trailers and truck bodies. This innovation will play a pivotal role in making zero-emission mid-mile transportation a commercially viable option.
“This project has the potential to revolutionize refrigerated transport by reducing reliance on the electrical grid and minimizing overall emissions,” said Michael Bodey, director of technology discovery and innovation at Wabash. “While many of today’s zero-emission products focus on tailpipe emissions, they still draw power from energy grids, which often rely on non-renewable sources. Our goal is to offer a truly green solution—a well-to-wheel approach—that accounts for the full life cycle of energy consumption, from production to usage.”
Wabash will use its proprietary EcoNex™ Technology, a composite material designed to enhance thermal efficiency and reduce energy consumption, while the University of Delaware will contribute its proprietary TuFF technology, which utilizes recycled aerospace-grade carbon fiber, to strengthen and lighten the trailers and truck bodies.
“By incorporating lightweight solar panels and utilizing EcoNex Technology in refrigerated trailers and truck bodies, we are addressing two of the most significant barriers to electrification: weight and energy consumption,” Bodey explained. “EcoNex not only improves the insulation and performance of the trailers but also contributes to overall weight reduction, making the solution even more efficient.”
Batteries powering heavy trucks can weigh between 5,000 to 10,000 pounds, often limiting the payload capacity and drawing significant energy from the electrical grid when charging. The goal of this project is to develop enabling technologies that reduce the weight and energy needs of these vehicles while offering fleet customers greener, more efficient transportation options.
“TuFF is the world’s strongest short fiber composite that is reciprocal with sustainable solutions to the mobility industry. It’s great to collaborate with Wabash on building the most sustainable solar panel integrated refrigerated trailer for the trucking industry,” said Srikanth Pilla, UD PI and director of the Center for Composites Materials at the University of Delaware.
Wabash is the only trailer and truck body original equipment manufacturer (OEM) selected for this government grant, highlighting its unique leadership position in sustainability and innovation. By focusing on mid-mile transportation, the project seeks to create a flexible solar energy system that can be CARB-compliant across different vehicle types, without requiring fully electric platforms to meet compliance.
This initiative is part of the DOE’s Silicon Solar Manufacturing and Dual-use Photovoltaics Incubator Funding Program, which supports advancements in PV technology across the supply chain and fosters new markets for American products.
